“Afar” is more along the lines of “far away,” whereas “far” is just “far.” For instance, one could say, “take the current from far away,” but it would sound a little incomplete to say, “take the current from far.” But I’ve never heard anyone use “afar” in regular speech; only in formal or poetic speech.
