Why is there no insulation on power lines?

Why is there no insulation on power lines?

At higher voltages it takes a lot more insulation to keep the lines from arcing through it. So the power companies use clearances to keep the lines away from anything that they could arc to. The trees that touch the lines usually would get burned off until there is no contact.

Is plastic a good insulator for electrical wires?

In many situations, we want to trap heat and slow down its flow, or stop the flow of electricity and prevent electric shocks. Plastic, rubber, wood, and ceramics are good insulators. Plastic coating is also used to cover most electrical wires in appliances. Air is also a good insulator of heat.

Why are insulators used with overhead lines?

Overhead line insulators are required to withstand both electrical and mechanical stresses. In addition, the surface leakage path must have sufficiently high resistance so as to avoid any current leakage to earth. In a puncture, the discharge occurs from conductor to pin through the body of the insulator.

Are electric power lines insulated?

Power lines are not insulated and you should always avoid contact with them. It is quite possible for people to get electrocuted if you touch power lines.

Why are electrical wires covered with plastic covering?

Covering electrical wiring using plastic ensures that the current doesn’t flow outside the system. This avoids shocks, short-circuit etc. Plastics are non-reactive and poor conductors of electricity or to be precise, they are insulators. They do not allow the electric current to pass through them easily.

Why are electrical wires covered with plastic coating?

Most electrical wire is covered in a rubber or plastic coating called insulation. The purpose of insulation covering the metal part of an electrical wire is to prevent accidental contact with other conductors of electricity, which might result in an unintentional electric current through those other conductors.
